BPC-157 ('body protection compound') is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide derived from a protein in gastric juice. It is one of the most-discussed peptides in injury-recovery circles, promoted for healing tendons, ligaments, muscle and gut.
The science is genuinely interesting but almost entirely in rats, and dominated by a single research group. There are no completed, published randomised controlled trials in humans for either efficacy or safety — the honest framing is 'promising in animals, essentially unproven in people.'
It is an unapproved drug that the FDA placed in a compounding category for substances potentially presenting significant safety risks; the nomination was later withdrawn, but withdrawal is not clearance and the FDA still publishes the concerns it identified. It is banned in sport, and the product sold as 'research only' is unregulated, with real purity, sterility and identity risks.

BPC-157 is one of the most talked-about peptides in injury-recovery circles, and one of the most misunderstood. The hype paints it as a near-miraculous healing agent for tendons, ligaments and gut. The reality is more sober: the science is genuinely interesting, almost entirely done in rats, and dominated by a single research group. There are zero completed, published randomised controlled trials in humans for either efficacy or safety [13][14].
That does not mean it is worthless. It means the honest framing is "promising in animals, essentially unproven in people." The most useful thing this page can do is lay out exactly what the evidence supports, where it stops, and what the real-world risks are.
Safety note
In September 2023 the FDA placed BPC-157 in Category 2 of its interim bulk-drug-substance policy — substances the agency has identified as potentially presenting significant safety risks in compounding — citing potential immunogenicity (immune reactions), manufacturing impurities, and lack of human safety data [15]. That nomination was subsequently withdrawn, and BPC-157 is not currently in the active Category 2 table; it appears instead among nominated-but-withdrawn substances. This is the part that gets misreported: a withdrawal is not an approval, a clearance, or a finding that the concerns were resolved — the FDA continues to publish exactly those concerns against BPC-157 in the withdrawn-nominations table [17]. It remains an unapproved new drug, not a legitimate prescription medicine. It has also been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency since 2022 (Class S0, prohibited in and out of competition) and sits on the U.S. Department of Defense prohibited supplement list [16]. Athletes and service members face real sanctions independent of any medical risk.
There is no way to put a reassuring number on human safety here, because the human safety data does not exist. The "no toxicity" claims come from the originating rodent studies, not from people [7][13].
