Overview
Melanotan 1 — known clinically as afamelanotide and sold as SCENESSE — is one of the rare peptides in this space that carries genuinely strong human evidence. It is a regulator-approved prescription medicine: EMA-approved since 2014 and FDA-approved on 8 October 2019 [1][12]. That approval is narrow but real. It covers the prevention of phototoxicity (a severe, painful reaction to light) in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare inherited disorder [1][12].
Before going further, one distinction matters more than any other. The approved product is a 16 mg biodegradable implant inserted under the skin by a trained clinician roughly every two months [4][12]. It is not the same thing as the unregulated "Melanotan I" (or the related "Melanotan II") tanning peptides sold online for self-injection. Those grey-market products are not approved, carry unknown purity and sterility, and are not what the trials below studied. Throughout this article, "afamelanotide" refers to the regulated drug — and the strong evidence applies only to that product.
