Strong, consistent animal evidence for oxytocin's role in social bonding and recognition; translation to exogenous/intranasal human effects is the gap.

Overview
Oxytocin is the poster child of "social" neuroscience — the so-called love hormone, cuddle hormone, or bonding molecule. It is also a cautionary tale about how a compelling story can outrun the data.
The popular narrative leans heavily on one famous experiment: a 2005 paper in Nature reporting that a single sniff of oxytocin made people more trusting in an economic game [1]. That finding launched a thousand studies and a thriving grey-market for "research" nasal sprays. But here is the uncomfortable part: when large, pre-registered, well-powered teams tried to reproduce the trust effect, it largely vanished [2][3]. A systematic review of the wider literature found the field riddled with low statistical power, exploratory practices, and failed replications [4]. And the single most rigorous clinical test — a multisite autism trial — came back negative [8].
This does not mean oxytocin does nothing. Meta-analyses suggest small, real effects on reading facial emotion [5][6][7]. But "small and inconsistent" is a long way from "love hormone." If you are an informed self-experimenter, this article is your reality check.
