Overview
Epithalon — also written Epitalon — is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, often shortened to AEDG) modelled on Epithalamin, a crude extract of the pineal gland of cattle. In longevity and biohacking circles it has a reputation as the "telomerase peptide": a compound that supposedly switches the cellular ageing clock back by lengthening telomeres.
That reputation is built on a genuinely interesting body of work, but it deserves a hard look. Almost the entire evidence base comes from a single Russian research group — Khavinson, Anisimov and colleagues at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology — accumulated over roughly 25 years [1]. The data are overwhelmingly preclinical: cell cultures, rodents, fruit flies and one small monkey study. The human longevity claims rest on a handful of small, mostly unblinded trials run by the same institutes that developed and commercialised the peptide [1][11][12][13].
The mechanistic story is plausible and the recent independent corroboration is encouraging. But the human evidence is weak, non-replicated and riddled with conflicts of interest. Read on with that framing firmly in mind.
